A person's weight & degree of physical fitness is a visual representation of their overall health. Unhealthy eating and lifestyle habits cause many health problems, even if the only one we can SEE is weight. 13% of our population was overweight in 1980....61% are overweight now, and 27% are clinically obese. So let's check YOUR weight, and see if you really are too heavy: This is done by calculating your Body Mass Index: BMI. According to Dr. Isadore Rosenfield M.D. a BMI of less than 25, regardless of age places you at the lowest risk of death from all causes (except if you smoke cigarettes, because the lung disease and cancer that they cause have little to do with body weight). A BMI between 25 and 30 reflects mild to moderate overweight, and constitutes only a slight risk (except if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a very high cholesterol level). A BMI higher than 30 is bad news and requires action! So our hypothetical five-footer who weighs 200 pounds is really in trouble with his BMI of 39.2. (Mine is 22.9) You're not afraid of the truth are you? Do it NOW! The WHR (Waist to Hip ratio) is even more important than the BMI because it reflects not only the amount of fat, but also how it is distributed. The latter is largely genetically determined. Here is how to determine your WHR: With your belly completely relaxed, (don't cheat), measure your waist at its narrowest. (your waist is somewhere between your bellybutton and your belt line). Divide that number in inches by the widest circumference of your hips, that is where your buttocks are the most prominent. A WHR greater than 0.85 in women and 0.95 in men is fraught with risk. Most weight loss programs focus only on weight loss. They give people a temporary plan of action strictly designed to take off weight. These include packaged meal plans, restricted calorie plans, herbal remedies, stimulants, Diet Pill Drugs (weight loss pills) and weight watchers to name a few. See Consumer Reports, June 1993 which analyzed several commercial programs. It noted that most people prefer Slim-Fast, Dynatrim, and Jenny Craig, and stay with them for about 6 months. During that time they lose 10 to 20 percent of their starting weight; within 6 months they regain half of that weight back, within 2 years they gain two thirds of it back, and within five years they regain 95 percent of the initial weight they lost. As you probably know many end up weighing more than when they started. Drink a minimum of 8 large glasses of water daily, and buy one of these plastic lemons to keep with you at all times. NO SALT! When ever you would salt something, put lemon on it instead, and believe it or not, lemon is a very effective self-defense tool (aim for the eyes). Works even better if you tell your attacker it's hydrochloric acid! You'll get all the salt you need from your food.
