"Structure-Function"

This term refers to wishful thinking or "Extrapolation":  A manufacturer will find a vitamin, mineral, or compound that our bodies need. He will synthesize (fabricate a molecular mirror image) this item and then promote it as though it had all of the properties of the real thing.
Note: Nature doesn't necessarily recognize mirror images

As an example: Sulforaphane is a well know cancer-fighter which neutralizes up to 90% of carcinogenic agents from the body thus reducing the incidence of cancer in research rats and mice by 95%.

Problem: Sulforaphane is found in kale plants which don't taste good!

Solution: Purify it out of the kale and into a nutraceutical form. COOL!
(
Now we can patent it!)

NOTE: The resulting product's cancer-fighting power was reduced by 95%

See Vitamin C.

Of particular note, and one that many academic researchers fail to acknowledge, is that not all supplement products are created equal. In these AREDS studies, Centrum-style (poorly absorbed) supplements, which were taken by 2/3rds of the patients, had no significant beneficial effects on the health outcomes measured. In similar studies presented by other researchers from around the world, the data clearly supports the ideas that we've been advocating for many years now - that the specific product formulation DOES seem to matter - and matter in ways that can mean the difference between achieving the health benefits that you're looking for - or putting your health at risk in the form of an unproven product.   [SupplementWatch NewsLetter - February 2003
