AIR POLLUTION

We live in a chemical soup. Outside air is usually cleaner than inside air (unless filtered) because outside your house, nature supplies positive and negative ions that charge dust particles with opposite polarities causing them to clump together and drop to the earth.

In addition nature produces natural Ozone which despite its bad name is only high-test Oxygen. This ozone is a natural antiseptic, and it kills viruses, bacteria, molds and spores.

Inside your house or office you have metal heating ducts which remove all the negative ions. This makes the area highly ion positive and actually has a negative psychological effect on humans. The Russians have researched this and found that they could make people happy and productive or unhappy and aggressive by controlling the ion ratio.

Ways of controlling indoor pollution range from simple fiber filters, through HEPA filters, Electrostatic filters, and Actual Air Purifiers. All of them work in certain situation, some of them work well, and some don't work well at all. There is a tremendous amount of information out there, much of it bogus by practical standards. For instance a large well respected testing company did a test of all sorts of filters a year or so ago. It had a difficult time coming up with a definitive test since most of the filters were between 85 to 95 % effective, so it used the CADAR rating which multiplies efficiency times airflow. Obviously the bigger the fan and the less restrictive the air flow, the better the CADAR number. Electrostatic filters reigned supreme, HEPA filters were at the bottom. Well the electrostatic filter is probably one of the best filters going for removing airborne particles. Only problem is they need to be cleaned every 2 to 5 days, a fact not prominently displayed in their advertising. I will expand upon this in future revisions, but suffice to say that the US Army tested all sorts of these Electrostatic filters and threw them away. Good filters, but not practical.

Simple air filters supplemented by a tri-media filter to remove odors and gasses work well in single room installations where there is no serious source of pollution, ie: Cat, smoker, food preparation. HEPA filters are generally recommended by the medical profession since that is the type of filter that hospitals use and they really do a job on the air, taking out particles down to .01 microns. The ones I sell have tri-media pre-filters to remove odors and gasses.

Purifiers are recommended where there is a source of constant pollution like smokers, cats, food, or body odors.
